Danceables

    Hi Everyone,
the double-cd SWP 071 'Danceables' is a compilation of Michael Baird's most danceable tracks from between 1987 and 2022, all beautifully remastered! Oh noooo, a retrospective – that means looking back instead of forward?! Well only a couple of months ago we released the more meditative SWP 069 'Resonance Vibration Frequencies' and we'll be releasing a new album of Michael's drumming, in an improvised music setting together with some wonderful musicians, after the summer, so don't worry – it's all systems go! But this is a body of work that is being presented, Zambian-born Michael Baird grew up with African music, a true Pan-Africanist who is also a modernist who is also an original voice. Aside from his home country, we have beats inspired by rhythms from Rwanda, Senegal, Congo, as well as influences from Jazz, Funk, Dance, Lounge, all in all a mixture that only he could concoct: "You borrow, you don't copy, you borrow a certain aspect to create something new – hopefully with the blessing of the spirits.”
Michael Baird plays all instruments and voices on SWP 071, but with guest appearances by friends David Tronzo (USA), Hans Hasebos (NL), Mark Lotz (D), Kofi Ayivor (GHA), Ousmane Seye (SEN), Russell 'Konkie' Halmeyer (CUR), Jeroen van Vliet (NL), Sophie de Vries (NL), Nusch Baird (NL), Yvonne 'Niobe' Cornelius (D), Michael Moore (USA), Vitold Rek (PL), Michel Massot (B), Arnold 'Broer' van den Bogaart (NL).
Michael will be 'in the chat', answering any questions you might have. So tune in, get a dancing space ready in the room, and enjoy.....

about

Zambia-born drummer/composer/producer Michael Baird was an ‘Afro-futurist’ way before the World-Music Scene and the Hipper than Hip ever came up with that name! This double-cd compilation of tracks from between 1987 and 2022 shows that beyond any doubt. (Total time 108'30"). But musically he always felt himself just a plain ‘Pan-Africanist’ - but making use of the audio technology at hand. Aside from his home country Zambia, we have here beats inspired by rhythms from Rwanda, Senegal, Congo, as well as influences from Jazz, Funk, Dance, Lounge. “You borrow”, he says, “you don’t copy, you borrow a certain aspect to create something new – hopefully with the blessing of the spirits.” He grew up with African music. His style, dubbed ‘Voodoo-Jazz’ by some German journalist back in 1988, developed further into what by 2004 Michael went on to refer to as ‘African Abstractions’. Resident in Europe since he was ten years of age, he has always remained in touch with his African roots – a simple matter of identity!

From Kasaï trance to Fwanda dance, from ambient Elektro to polymetric Free-Jazz, from Pygmy pipes to Maghreb yells – this selection comprises the 19 most danceable tracks (four of which are new remixes) from over the years, all wonderfully remastered.

With guest musicians David Tronzo (USA), Kofi Ayivor (GHA), Hans Hasebos (NL), Mark Lotz (D), Ousmane Seye (SEN), Russell 'Konkie' Halmeyer (CUR), Jeroen van Vliet (NL), Sophie de Vries (NL), Nusch Baird (NL), Yvonne 'Niobe' Cornelius (D), Michael Moore (USA), Vitold Rek (PL), Michel Massot (B), Arnold 'Broer' van den Bogaart (NL). Michael Baird played all the other instruments & vocals.

about

Michael Baird Utrecht, Netherlands

This is drummer/composer Michael Baird's page. Born in Lusaka, Zambia. (Not the LA session drummer and member of pop group Journey - he has a red beard and is known as Mike Baird!). Michael is known for his own style called 'Voodoo-Jazz', combining jazz with Africa, but there is also some other stuff - all original, pleasantly irksome, nicely weird. Check it out! All released by SWP Records. ... more
